Nostalgic trains: Travel the noble way

Panting and steaming, the nearly one hundred years old steam engines still make their way to the top of Mt. Rigi. To reach the summit, a steam locomotive consumes about 500 kilogrammes of coal and 2'200 litres of water.

Since 1871...
... Europe's first ever mountain railway has brought visitors from Vitznau up to Mt. Rigi. Many of the locomotives and coaches from the early years of the mountain railway have been painstakingly and professionally restored to their former splendour, and are now proudly waiting for their passengers.

No steam trains in 2011/2012 because of construction work at the stations in Goldau and in Rigi Kaltbad.

Full steam ahead
Feel the power of the engine, smell the steam, admire the shining metal and glowing sparks escaping the chimney. You will be fascinated to see the perfect functioning of the powerful mechanism. Such a ride on a steam train is a great nostalgic adventure and an unforgettable experience. Our showpieces are waiting to go full steam ahead!

Travel like royalty in the "Belle Epoque" saloon coach
Several famous people have travelled in this saloon coach (dating from 1873). Velvet, mahogany, shining brass and the attractive, romantic furnishings will take you back in time to a nostalgic past. During the ascent you will see some fantastic scenery. A charming hostess will accompany you on the trip. We pay great attention to details, because "noblesse oblige". As an example, for the aperitif we serve only the finest Swiss wine in glasses that are tilted according to the gradient of the railway track.
