Chapel

Evangelical Reformed Church Rigi Kaltbad

As you walk from Rigi Kaltbad to Rigi First, after just a few minutes you come to an unusual building. Built into the steep slope on the valley side and clad in natural wood stands the uniquely designed Reformed mountain chapel of Rigi Kaltbad.

Description

Even decades ago, the visitors staying in Kaltbad included many Protestant Christians who needed somewhere to pray and attend church services. A room was available at the Grand Hotel for the purpose in those days, but the calls for a separate chapel became ever louder. On the initiative of the local priest and other private individuals, an association was set up with the aim of raising the necessary funding for a separate church from chalet owners on Mt. Rigi and from like-minded people all over Switzerland.
In 1962, work began on a building based on the ideas of architect Ernst Gysel. Not everyone was impressed by the design, regarded at the time as very modern, and certainly not those people who had hoped for a picture-book little chapel. But it worked! The mountain church was inaugurated at Christmas 1963, and today is very well-known and much visited.

The chapel holds 120 people and is ideal for weddings, christenings and cultural events.
The restaurants in nearby Rigi Kaltbad will be glad to provide drinks or a meal afterwards.
