Description

Just a few minutes' walk from Arth-Goldau station is the valley station for Rigi Bahnen mountain railway. The wonderful, historic Arth-Rigi railway opened in 1875 and, over 140 years later, is still fascinating for young and old. Not only can the valley station be easily reached on public transport but Goldau is also perfectly situated for car drivers. Just next to the Goldau motorway exit is the large A4 parking area which is right beside the Rigi railway track. After the Goldau valley station, the A4 station is the second stop on the railway line.
From the A4 stop, the Rigi railway climbs up the steep track to Rigi Kulm. At the halfway station in Kräbel (about 10 minutes from Goldau), you can transfer to the Kräbel-Rigi Scheidegg aerial cable car.
The Rigi railway winds on through woods and tunnels, across meadows and past steep waterfalls until it reaches the very summit at Rigi Kulm. Every now and again, you can see far into Central Switzerland and down onto Lake Zug from the train.
A ride in one of the many historic carriages is a very special experience. In these beautifully restored carriages, dating from between 1871 and 1911, passengers can enjoy the all-round view with nothing between them and the fresh mountain air. A real highlight is to travel in a train drawn by steam engine no. 16 or no. 17, built in 1923 and 1925 respectively.

On this cogwheel train the Rigi-voucher can be redeemed.
