Astrid Chapel Küssnacht am Rigi

The Astrid Chapel was built in memory of the Princess of Sweden and the beloved Queen of Belgium who died in a car accident in 1935 in Küssnacht.

Description

From Küssnacht the road leads along the bay to Merlischachen, Meggen and Lucerne. At the edge of the village, well signposted stands the Queen-Astrid-Chapel. For safety reasons and in the course of traffic renovation, the chapel was moved to the lower side of the road, on the lakeshore, in 1960. This sensational building transport is well documented in the museum of local history. The chapel can now be reached from the car park via an underpass. From the terrace, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the harbour of Küssnacht and the Rigi. In honour of Queen Astrid of Belgium, a commemoration ceremony is held every year at the end of August (29.08.) in the presence of the Belgian Ambassador.
